Nigel Gormly brings a wealth of investment experience from the New Zealand Superannuation Fund where, until recently, he led the International Direct Investment team and was responsible for the Fund’s direct investments in energy, infrastructure, specialty real estate and expansion capital. In addition to the broad portfolio of direct investments, He was also responsible for the Fund’s collaboration efforts with large global institutional investors, family offices and thought leaders around climate change and the creation of innovative investment platforms. Nigel continues to represent the NZ Super Fund on the Boards of LanzaTech and View, Inc.

Nigel is passionate about innovation, leveraging the power of innovative technologies, business models and processes to transform competitive advantage and create value. His broad experience across operations, investment and governance enables him to bring clarity to ambiguous situations to overcome obstacles and uncertainty.

In 2020 he founded Waihou Capital to support the commercialization and scale up of technologies and investment platforms that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, lead climate change action and support economic development. This includes working with a range of early stage NZ based technology development companies, private investors and investment funds. Waihou Capital is also developing a number of initiatives that leverage Nigel’s international networks to accelerate adoption of technologies in New Zealand that can improve sustainable economic growth. In addition, Nigel serves on the Investment Committee of Te Pūia Tāpapa, the collective direct co-investment fund for 26 Iwi and Māori entities. The fund was established in 2018 and aligns with the first principles of iwi collaboration to provide leadership, governance and best practice to achieve high growth and stronger returns.

Earlier in his career, Nigel spent 10 years with Fonterra, where he held a number of strategic development and commercial leadership roles, most recently as General Manager Commercial Ventures. This included responsibility for delivering business performance, leading performance insights and supporting new product / market development across marketing, innovation and group technology for New Zealand’s largest private sector investor in research and development.
